What is SMTP Protocol?

SMTP is a term which we hear often and yet not everybody understands what it entails. For starters SMTP is an acronym for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Simply put, and SMTP protocol is the communication protocol that is used by mail servers. It revolves around the sending and receiving of emails and is thus imperative for electronic mail transmission. When you send an email, that email will need to travel, so to speak, in order to arrive to the recipient’s mailbox. To initialize this process you will need to communicate with the SMTP server by using the SMTP protocol.

From a practical point of view, it takes care of the sending, as well as having the ability of queuing the email messages at the recipient’s end. SMTP is a protocol whereby the sender of the email communicates with the receiver of the email. This communication is carried out by issuing a number of command strings as well as supplying the required data over a connection. Hence, the SMTP client, or sender, will be opening an SMTP session and receive responses from the SMTP server of the receiver.

SMTP is basically a delivery protocol. So, to try to depict this simply, the mail is pushed to a mail server once it arrives. The mail is routed according to the destination server. SMTP was introduced back in the 1980’s but it is still very much used today. In fact most email frameworks use SMTP. This has led to all modern email client programs to support it. There are also physical SMTP servers which will be specifically dedicated to servicing email traffic.

First, a TCP connection from the sender to the server is made. This is done on the right host port. Till now port number 25 is the most commonly used port in the case of SMTP. Then once the connection has been made, the 220 READY FOR MAIL message is sent. When this message is successfully received at the other end, a HELO command is sent. The server will then react to this with a 250 Requested Mail Action Okay message. After this process is carried out, the mail exchange will commence. This will begin with the MAIL command and after this the sender will issue some RCPT commands which will identify the recipient/s of that mail message. The recipient will in turn recognize that command by sending the 250 OK message, or in case it is not recognized, an error code, known as the 550 No such user here.

Once all the RCPT commands have been sent and approved, in the case of several recipients, the sender can then issue the DATA command in order to advise the recipients that the exchange of the full mail message can now commence. The recipients will react to this with a 354 Start Mail command. This will include a termination sequence which the sender will need to use at the end of the message that shall be sent. This comprises five characters, namely the carriage return, the line break, period, the carriage return and the line sustain. The client will then proceed to sending the data line by line, until completed. The recipient will respond with a 250 OK if everything has been received properly. In case not, an error message will be sent.
